Pool owners with sand filters have likely experienced the icky feeling of a clogged filter. It’s hard to swim when your pool water is cloudy and full of debris, right? Well, it turns out that DE powder can help you avoid this problem! Read on for more information about how DE powder works and how you can use it in your pool.
The pool season is almost upon us and we know that you’re excited to get the party started. It’s always a good idea to be prepared before the guests arrive, which is why we want to give you some tips on how DE Powder can help your sand filter work more efficiently this summer.
What is DE Powder?
DE Powder stands for diatomaceous earth, also known as silica dust or silicon dioxide. It works by attracting dirt particles in water and trapping them inside of its tiny holes. This creates less wear-and-tear on your equipment because it doesn't have to constantly clean out debris from itself like it would without DE Powder!
How Do I Use DE Powder?
We recommend using about ½ teaspoon per square foot of sand surface area each week during peak use. When DE powder is applied to the surface of a swimming pool, it creates a thin film that blocks dirt particles from entering the filter or settling into the water. This helps keep pools cleaner longer without having to backwash as often which saves time and money! Some DE powder instructions vary, so depending on the kind you purchase, you are going to want to double-check the instructions on the bag/box to make sure you are using it properly.
Where Can I Get DE Powder?
You can find DE powder available for purchase at your local pool supply store, and even at some local hardware stores. If you are trying to purchase DE powder in large quantities, it may be best to purchase it directly from the manufacturer/supplier. If you are in the Central Florida area and are not comfortable with servicing your pool yourself, give Sea Breeze Pools a call today for a free consultation.
Diatomaceous Earth Replacements
If you are not comfortable using DE powder in your pool for any reason, there are some alternatives that you can use instead. A common replacement for DE powder is ZeoFiber. ZeoFiber is a pure white cellulose fiber produced from wood. It's 100% biodegradable and renewable, making it the perfect environmentally-friendly replacement for diatomaceous earth in pool water filtering.
