Tips for Keeping Your Pool Clean During the Hot Summer Months in Central Florida

As we bask in the peak of the summer months in Central Florida, many homeowners are enjoying their personal oasis – their swimming pools. Nothing beats taking a refreshing plunge to escape the relentless summer heat. But maintaining a pool's pristine condition isn't a walk in the park. The scorching sun, frequent use, and Florida's natural elements can all contribute to a murky, uninviting pool. Here are some tried and tested tips to keep your swimming pool crystal clear throughout the summer.

Got a Pool Problem? We Can Help.

Regular Skimming and Scrubbing

Keeping your pool clean begins with the basics. A skimmer is an essential tool that can effortlessly fish out leaves, bugs, and other debris from your pool. Daily skimming significantly improves the pool's appearance and reduces the number of substances that can alter the chemical balance of your pool. Similarly, it's crucial to scrub the sides of the pool to prevent algae build-up. A weekly scrub should suffice, but if you spot algae, an easy trick is to use a chlorine-filled sock on the spot, letting it sit for a few hours to obliterate the stubborn green fiend.

Keep an Eye on the Chemical Levels

Maintaining the right chemical balance in your pool is of paramount importance. Improper levels can breed bacteria and algae, leading to murky water and potentially causing skin and eye irritations. Pool owners should regularly test and adjust six chemical levels: Cyanuric Acid, Free Chlorine, Acidity/Alkalinity (pH level), Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness, and Chloramines. Pool testing kits are available, allowing you to monitor and adjust these levels. The frequency of testing could be every week under normal conditions, but in the sweltering Florida summer, consider doing it twice a week. We have a quick guide to pool chemicals available for you HERE.

Watch Your Water Level

During summer, the combination of pool use and evaporation can lower your pool's water level. However, remember that too much water can also be problematic. Maintaining the correct water level ensures your pool’s components work correctly and efficiently. The water level should ideally be at the center of your pool skimmer or pool tile. If the water is too high or low, use a garden hose or a submersible pump, respectively, to adjust it.

Maintain Your Pool Filter

Just like your home air conditioner filters, pool filters collect dirt, debris, and even small toys at times. Therefore, regular cleaning is necessary to maintain their effectiveness. A rule of thumb is to clean the filters at least every 4-6 weeks. However, more frequent cleaning may be required during Florida's summer months due to increased use and the high amounts of dust and debris that can blow into the pool.

Regular Pool Shocking

Despite regular cleaning and chemical balancing, sometimes, your pool may need a little extra care. Pool shocking refers to super chlorinating your pool to kill bacteria and rid it of contaminants. It's recommended to shock your pool at least twice a season. However, given Central Florida's hot climate and if your pool sees heavy usage, you may need to do this more often. Always shock your pool during the evening or night to prevent the sun from burning off the chlorine.

Invest in a Pool Cover

Pool covers are a fantastic investment. They not only reduce water evaporation but also keep your pool clean, saving on the time spent skimming and scrubbing. It prevents debris, leaves, and insects from entering your pool. Moreover, it can help maintain the chemical balance in your pool by preventing sunlight from breaking down the chlorine.
